Boarding Information

Potential Risks in Communal Settings

While we take every precaution to maintain a clean, safe, and hygienic facility, it’s important to understand the inherent risks of boarding in any communal setting:

Infectious Diseases:  Even with required vaccinations, no vaccine guarantees 100% immunity. For example, Bordetella (kennel cough) is highly contagious and can spread even among vaccinated dogs, although vaccination significantly reduces the severity of symptoms. Dogs infected with Bordetella may not show symptoms for several days, meaning they could unknowingly expose others during their stay.

Parasites:  Communal settings can increase the risk of exposure to parasites like fleas, ticks, or intestinal worms. To minimize this risk, we recommend keeping your dog on a veterinarian-approved flea, tick, and deworming prevention program year-round.

Stress-Related Health Concerns:  Just like humans, some dogs may experience mild stress when in a new environment, which can temporarily weaken their immune system and make them more susceptible to minor illnesses.

How We Reduce Risks:  We follow rigorous cleaning and sanitation protocols, provide ample fresh air circulation using an industrial Air Exchange Unit with a HEPA Air Purifier, and require all dogs to meet strict vaccination and health standards. These measures significantly reduce the likelihood of illness or parasitic exposure.

Vaccination Requirements

At Country Kennels, the health and safety of all our guests are our top priorities. To ensure a clean and disease-free environment, all dogs boarding with us must be up-to-date on the following required vaccinations:

  1. Rabies Vaccine

  • What It Protects Against: Rabies is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system of mammals, including humans. It is transmitted through the saliva of infected animals, typically via bites. This vaccine is not only crucial for your dog's health but also a legal requirement in most areas.

  2. Bordetella Vaccine (commonly known as the kennel cough vaccine)

  • What It Protects Against: Bordetella bronchiseptica is a highly contagious bacterial infection that causes respiratory issues in dogs, including coughing, sneezing, and nasal discharge. This vaccine helps protect your dog from kennel cough, which can spread quickly in social settings like boarding facilities.
  • It’s important to understand that a dog infected with Bordetella may not show any symptoms for several days after exposure. This means a dog could carry the infection while boarding, appear perfectly healthy, and only begin showing signs—like coughing or sneezing—after returning home. Unfortunately, during this time, the infected dog can unknowingly expose other dogs to the illness.
  • We require all dogs to be vaccinated for Bordetella to help reduce the risk of infection. However, like the flu shot for humans, the vaccine minimizes the severity of symptoms but does not guarantee complete immunity.

  3. DHPP Vaccine

  • What It Protects Against:
  • Distemper: A viral illness that can affect your dog’s respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems, often with severe and sometimes fatal consequences.
  • Hepatitis (Adenovirus): A viral infection that targets the liver, kidneys, and eyes, potentially leading to severe illness or death.
  • Parvovirus: A highly contagious virus that causes severe gastrointestinal distress, dehydration, and, in many cases, death if untreated.
  • Parainfluenza: A respiratory virus that can lead to coughing, fever, and nasal discharge.

Why These Vaccines Are Important

These vaccinations not only safeguard your dog but also protect the other pets in our care. A vaccinated environment reduces the risk of outbreaks and ensures that all our guests remain healthy and happy during their stay.

It is the owner's responsibility to provide up-to-date vaccination records showing that your dog is current on all the above vaccinations. These records can be uploaded directly to your customer profile from our online customer portal tab above or through our free "Gingr for Pet Parents" app, which is available for download on any smartphone. Please note that dogs with expired or missing vaccination records may be denied service

Things to provide for your dogs visit

  • Food: Owners are required to provide their own dog food, either pre-packaged by meal or in a container with a lid. If you choose to bring the food in a container, please include the scoop you use at home to ensure consistency in portion sizes. For safety and regulatory reasons, we are unable to store opened dog food bags in their original packaging, as this would not comply with the requirements of our state kennel license issued by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture.

  • If your dog is on a raw food diet or requires food that needs refrigeration, we can accommodate that as well. We have a full-size refrigerator/freezer and microwave available on-site, but we ask that you pre-package the food by feeding. We do offer two feedings per day for your dog.

  • Medications and Supplements:  If your dog is on medication or taking any supplements, please remember to pack them. Our staff will gladly administer them at no additional charge. To include injectables, such as insulin.

  • Personal comforts from home:  You are welcome to bring any items that will help your dog feel comfortable during their stay, such as treats, toys, blankets, beds, or even a crate if that's what they prefer. However, please refrain from bringing bowls or dishes from home, as we sanitize all items frequently and cannot guarantee that the same bowl will be returned. Anything brought for your dog, will not be shared and will be kept in your dogs space.
